Understanding Dental Sedation
For individuals with significant apprehension towards dental procedures, sedation can be a valuable option, especially if fear prevents them from undergoing necessary treatments. At Roseland Dental, we are available to address any queries you may have regarding dental sedation, but here are some key points to consider.
Let's begin by clarifying the terminology. When an anti-anxiety medication like midazolam is administered intravenously, the procedure is known as Intravenous Conscious Sedation, abbreviated as IV sedation.
So, what can you expect from dental sedation? The experience involves a profound sense of relaxation, making you largely indifferent to your surroundings. It's common not to retain much memory of the procedure due to the amnesic effects of dental sedation. The process tends to feel swift, and you are likely to perceive it as concluding rapidly.
A common question is whether a local anaesthetic is still necessary. While IV sedation primarily aims to induce relaxation rather than act as a painkiller, we still need to ensure the numbness of the specific area for dental surgery. If numbing causes concern, we may delay the procedure until the sedation has taken full effect.
Safety is a paramount concern, and under the care of our specially-trained clinician Dr Brian Needham, Rebecca Colman Sedation Nurse and Sharon Sweet Sedation Nurse, dental sedation is deemed extremely safe. However, certain factors such as allergies, pregnancy, mental health, and alcohol use must be considered. Feel free to inquire at the practice for more detailed information.
For those with a sensitive gag reflex, dental sedation is generally effective in reducing it. Alternative methods to address a gag reflex without resorting to injections are available—please discuss these options with your dentist during your initial appointment.
Post-sedation, full recovery is not immediate. It is crucial to have a responsible adult accompany you to ensure a safe journey home. Subsequently, the rest of the day should be dedicated to relaxation, avoiding strenuous activities such as driving.
IV Conscious Sedation starts from £1350, inclusive of treatment costs.
